Vacation Rental by Owner Forum

Here is a complain I got about a vacation rental in Florida called Ocean Paradise Villa. Be aware!

"I noticed on your website you advertise a home in Long Key, Florida called Ocean Paradise Villa . I wanted to make you aware of the situation I encountered when renting this property.

I want to first make clear that I did not find the rental on your website when booking but I want to prevent future potential renters from having the same experience and to protect sites such as yours from these type of rentals.

The home is currently rented by Marcia Turner/Denny Workman. They are subrenters of the actual owner. These parties have been in litigation for years and is really no issue to a renter.

However, since April 2007, the Monroe County of Florida has padlocked the house and deemed it uninhabitable by occupants until certain repairs are made to bring the property up to code. It has been in this padlocked state for the past year and the issues are not resolved. During this padlocked, code-violation state they took my deposit, took my final payment, and never once mentioned code problems or the potential that the home would not be ready.

I was told a week before my arrival (2/9/08) that due to legal issues the house would not be ready for me. They did offer two extra weeks free next year but so far refuse to refund my money and answer any phone calls. I have spoken with several other renters who they have done this to as well. There is a detective in Monroe County, FL (Detective Sylvester) who is investigating these cases, of which there are several. It forces renters such as me to get involved with the police as well as hire personal civil case attorneys to try and recoup funds.

I have attached the actual pictures of what the house looks like on 2/11/08. You will see it differs greatly from the beautiful home advertised on your website!"

You might be interested to know that Marcia Turner is currently in jail in Key West for numerous counts of theft and grand theft. Here is a link to the newspaper article.

OMG this is really soaking thing. I mean look at the pictures. When one go for holidays he expect lots of fun and that's the reason for booking and planning holidays so we don't have to worrying about but if we get this kind of fraud then it's ..... We should be careful specially when we go for online booking and should go to trustworthy agent or site only.
